Business Support Grant for Sussex Businesses

In March 2020 the Chancellor announced that he would make available to all small businesses grant funding via local authorities.  He also announced a higher rate of support for those businesses which have been particularly affected by Coronavirus.

The three levels of grant are:

  • small business grant funding of £10,000 for all businesses in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief
  • grant funding of £10,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value of up to £15,000
  • grant funding of £25,000 for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with property with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000

We set out below a brief guide on how to apply for these grants in Brighton and surrounding areas:

Brighton & Hove Council

Brighton & Hove Council has confirmed that the appropriate level of grant will be paid to the person who was responsible for paying business rates for the property on 11 March.

The Council have stated that it is prioritising the distribution of small business grants and £21.4 million of payments have already been made to 1,300 businesses.

These are businesses whose bank details are held by the Council.  The Council urgently needs the bank details of other eligible businesses so their grant payments can be made.

The Council recognises that some business rate payers may not be able to collect/receive correspondence about potential support sent by post to their business address during the current lock down. To address this they have set up a secure online portal that will allow it to gather information from businesses so they can receive their grant entitlement.
